PLEASANTON -- A patriotic concert, a visit by Uncle Sam and a tribute to members of the military were all part of a red, white and blue afternoon in the park Friday in Pleasanton.
The free, family-friendly event and picnic was once again held on Independence Day at Lions Wayside Park.
The event, "Celebrating Freedom and its Evolutions since the Revolution," featured a free concert by the Pleasanton Community Concert Band. Besides patriotic music, this year the band featured music commemorating the Civil War.
Guest speaker Ann Collins provided commentary about women during that war, and Uncle Sam (aka Ward Belding) led a singalong. There were color guards, and Boy Scout Troop 908 led the "Pledge of Allegiance."
The band also played the anthem of each branch of the armed services as a tribute to current and past members of the military and their families.
