WASHINGTON—Vice President Joe Biden is stretching the luck of the Irish a few more days as he hosts the country's prime minister for a St. Patrick's Day breakfast.

Biden held the belated celebration Wednesday—a day after he returned from Rome for the pope's installation—in honor of Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny at his Naval Observatory residence.

The annual breakfast included Irish music, along with traditional cuisine including Irish soda bread.

Biden, wearing a green tie and handkerchief, proclaimed he's five-eighths Irish before reading a poem dated 1919 by his grandfather, Edward Francis Blewitt.

Kenny visited the Capitol with President Barack Obama and the White House for a reception on Tuesday.
