SANTA CLARA -- Center Jonathan Goodwin arrived back at the 49ers' facility Tuesday morning after a whirlwind, cross-country tour in which attended the birth of his third son Monday in South Carolina.

Goodwin caught an early flight Tuesday (departed South Carolina at 5:40 a.m., arrived in San Francisco at 10:50 a.m.) to start preparing for the Atlanta Falcons, who will host the 49ers in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.

"That was part of the reason why I got in early this morning, so I can look at Atlanta on film and see the game plan," Goodwin said. "The Mrs. understands and I wanted to get back."

After the 49ers won Saturday night's playoff opener 45-31 over the Green Bay Packers, Goodwin flew to Atlanta for a connecting flight to Columbia, S.C., where he arrived at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Goodwin is in his second season with the 49ers and is trying to win his second Super Bowl, having served as the New Orleans Saints' center when they won it all three seasons ago.

Said Goodwin: "These opportunities, even though we've been to it the past two years, they don't come around too often."

As for he and his wife Alneesa's third son, Cade Spencer weighed in at 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and 20¿1/4 inches long.

"We are all very happy for Jon and Alneesa on the birth of their son, Cade, and would like to extend our warmest, heartfelt wishes to the entire Goodwin family," coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. "The 49ers are very pleased to say we've added great depth to our team."
