A portrait of Jake Blackshear, 33, who has invested $3,000 total in support of three solar projects, including a charter school in Colorado. Mosaic, widely known as the "Kickstarter for solar," has created a financing platform that allows individuals to put as little as $25 into solar projects on commercial buildings. As Mosaic, which is based in Oakland's Jack London Square, has grown, so has an understanding about the people drawn to the start-up's unique effort to engage people with solar, even if they don't have solar on their own roofs. The photograph was taken on Sept. 11, 2013 in San Francisco. (Dai Sugano/Bay Area News Group) ( Dai Sugano )
