Sumat Lam during an interview with the Bay Area News Group at Stanford University on Feb. 14, 2013. Lam's parents met in a refugee camp in Cambodia, lost family members in the killing fields there, and moved to the United States for a better life. After relocating to the East Bay, Sumat's father suffered a spinal injury that rendered him unable to work. Sumat persevered through his family's challenges, earning a 4.63 GPA at Pittsburg High School. With the help of Students Rising Above, a Bay Area nonprofit that helps young adults from impoverished situations to become the first in their families to go to college, Sumat is now attending Stanford.
