OAKLAND -- Officials are trying to determine what led to a teenage fan falling about 30 feet from the third deck of the Oakland Coliseum before the start of Thursday night's Raiders game.
The 17-year-old, who is from the Central Valley, was not identified. He remained in serious condition at a hospital Friday night with numerous broken bones and other injuries, authorities said. There was a hold placed on him for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
Oakland police Sgt. Chris Bolton called the incident "a deliberate act," but said it was unclear if the teen had an adequate understanding of the potential consequences of his actions.
Witness accounts varied, but a preliminary investigation revealed the man either jumped or climbed over a wall on the third deck and fell to the concrete of the lower concourse moments after kickoff, Bolton said Friday. Authorities are trying to confirm whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
The incident occurred shortly before the game started at 5:30 p.m., police said.
The Oakland Raiders released a statement late Thursday, saying while they did not have any information on the incident other than what had been reported by media outlets, "our thoughts and prayers are with this gentleman and his family and friends."
