REDWOOD CITY — The accomplice of a San Francisco man who was stabbed multiple times during the botched robbery of a San Bruno home was sentenced to 32 months in prison for his role in the crime, a prosecutor said Monday.
In exchange for pleading no contest in San Mateo County Superior Court to robbery and attempted robbery, 18-year-old Iosefa Mauga of Daly City got a shorter prison sentence, said Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti. He had been facing up to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors said Mauga and 21-year-old Joseph Tagolilelagi, who allegedly had a gun, walked into the garage of a San Bruno home and demanded money. The three victims turned over their wallets, cell phones and keys, but in the process a fight started.
One of the victims pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Tagolilelagi multiple times, after which Tagolilelagi then fired his gun once, according to prosecutors. The bullet didn't hit anyone. Police later found Tagolilelagi in front of a house, bleeding.
Mauga's attorney, Leland Davis III, said his client witnessed a lot of violence growing up, began to fall behind in school and consequently ended up going down the wrong path in life.
"I'm not trying to make any excuses for him," Davis said. "I just wish there were other alternatives."
Tagolilelagi is in custody in lieu of $2 million bail. He faces trial in February on robbery charges, Guidotti said.
