SAN MATEO High School is launching its annual canned food drive in partnership with Samaritan House and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Community members who wish to donate can bring canned food or monetary donations to 506 N. Delaware St. during school hours. Checks are tax-deductible and should be made out to "Samaritan House."

After school and weekends, students will collect contributions at local supermarkets in San Bruno to Palo Alto.

"The kids are amazing," said Sara Catalli, the school's activities director. "Many spend long hours in front of grocery stores in the cold to collect food from shoppers."

Donations can also be sent to the "Virtual Food Drive" at the Second Harvest Web site at https://donate.shfb.org/vfd/Default.aspx.

"The San Mateo High School Canned Food Drive is an extremely important part of our holiday food program," said Sharon Peterson, director of program operations at Samaritan House. "We distribute 400,000 pounds of food each holiday season, which includes more than 3,400 food boxes to families in need."

This year, San Mateo High is also helping other Bay Area schools make their food drives as successful as possible.

In 2005, San Mateo High collected 372,000 pounds of food to set a new Guinness World Records mark.
