LITTLE BOXES — Robert Keil, History Guild of Daly City/Colma member and author of a book on Daly City's Westlake district, will be the featured speaker at the free "History Evening" hosted by the guild at 7:30 p.m. May 21. He will show the public his newly completed, half-hour documentary based on his popular book, "Little Boxes: The Architecture of a Classic Mid-Century Suburb," at the Doelger Community Center multipurpose room, 101 Lake Merced Blvd., Daly City.

The film includes recent interviews with many of the principal people responsible for this unique area of Daly City. Developed by Henry Doelger, once the nation's largest homebuilder, Westlake features 1950s architecture created by a team of designers to encompass nearly every building in the development: shops, restaurants and apartments.

Westlake Shopping Center was one of the first shopping malls in the U.S. Westlake's most famous architectural icons, however, are its endless rows of boxy houses, the inspiration for Malvina Reynolds' folk song, "Little Boxes."
