Electrical workers hold annual picnic
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 617 held its annual picnic recently at Flood Park in Menlo Park. More than 500 active and retired members and their families enjoyed the day's fellowship and fun.
Although Local 617's motto is "helping our community," it also promotes teamwork among its members, and several Local 617 groups pitched in make the picnic successful.
The Journeymen Motorcycle Club ran the beverage booth.
The club rides the third Saturday of each month, often in support of a cause. On Oct. 4, the members will ride in support of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
The Electrical Workers Minority Caucus, a strong advocate for equal rights, opportunities and greater minority representation in the IBEW, handed out ice cream and ran the pie-eating contest.
The Retirees Club prepared, cooked and served the tasty food.
The Local 617 softball team, managed by Duane Beadles and Donny Solis — and recent champion of the Wednesday Night D-1 Men's Tournament sponsored by the San Mateo Department of Parks and Recreation — was in charge of the fast pitch booth.
Adult activities also included a horseshoe tournament and games. Children's activities included body art tattoos, prizes and a bounce house powered by Local 617's "Solar One" trailer, which was conceived, designed and built by students at the IBEW training facility in San Carlos.
The apprentice trailer was on display at the recent San Mateo County Fair and ended up providing emergency power to the Usable Futures Stage one night when the north end of the fairgrounds lost power.
