Californians looking for a safe residential care option for an elderly loved one can get little or no information about such facilities from the state agency that regulates them. The agency's website lists little more than addresses and licensing status for California residential care homes.

The state Department of Social Services doesn't make detailed inspection or safety information on residential elderly care facilities easily available online. So this news organization took what little information the state made available the fines for the facilities during the past two years and created an exclusive database.
