PALO ALTO -- 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will return to his alma mater, Palo Alto High, on Friday night as an honorary captain for the coin toss.
The "special guest" appearance comes on a night when Palo Alto will play its first game in its renovated stadium, a season opener against San Benito.
Harbaugh graduated in 1982 from Palo Alto, where he played quarterback under Earl Hansen, who remains the team's coach.
Hansen's son, Peter, is on Harbaugh's staff with the 49ers, and Palo Alto's Stanford-bound quarterback, Keller Chryst, is the son of 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst.
The pregame ceremony will begin at 7:10 p.m. It will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by the school's pep band and more than 100 student volunteers.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
