TODAY'S MUST-READ comes from Bay Area News Group colleague Tim Kawakami's blog, where he reveals a stunning propaganda ploy by Warriors executive director of public relations Raymond Ridder.
I'm posting the link below so you can fully grasp Ridder's improper attempts to create positive mojo among the frustrated fan base.
In short, Ridder admitted to using an alias in posting several pro-Warriors comments to a Warriors fan blog (not TK's).
In my opinion, this stinks on two levels:
One, it's a slimy way to drum up positive chatter on the Internet, especially in a forum designated for fans and instead taken advantage of by a team employee (albeit one in charge of putting the team's image in a positive light).
Two, Ridder is not a slimy guy, so I really fear what this will do to his reputation. He's a hard worker who's always very helpful to the media and, in turn, the Warriors franchise.
What Ridder did, however, is not all that uncommon in the mainstream media. PR directors routinely badger (or beg) the media into taking positive angles toward their teams. They'll sometimes give media tips on stories to pursue, which in turn might cast the franchise into a positive light.
This is a wake-up call to blogs, everywhere: You are not off-limits from the propaganda teams often spew.
Ridder made it clear that his posts (he had others over the past few months) came solely from him and not at the direction of other Warriors officials. Hopefully he's not covering up someone else's misdeeds.
All this broke last night, in the wake of his postings on WarriorsWorld.net about a conference call earlier in the day between season-ticket holders, Warriors' president Robert Rowell, general manager Larry Riley and broadcaster Bob Fitzgerald.
Ridder apparently wrote (under the alias "Flunkster Dude"): "I actually enjoyed the call and appreciate their honesty."
Honesty? That word seems so out of place in this, the latest episode in the Warriors' fall from "We Believe" grace.
