Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin agreed to become the coach at St. John's on Tuesday. The school said a news conference to introduce Lavin would be held today.
Lavin has been an analyst for ESPN since UCLA fired him in 2003. He had a 145-78 record in seven seasons at UCLA, leading the school to the NCAA tournament's round of 16 five times.
St. John's, which fired Norm Roberts after six seasons, has not been to the NCAA tournament since 2002.
UTEP: Tim Floyd is coming back to El Paso and couldn't be happier about returning to the school that gave him his first coaching job more than 30 years ago. The former USC coach and one-time assistant to former Miners coach Don Haskins was introduced as the fifth coach to lead UTEP since Haskins retired in 1999.
Oregon: The school has not contacted Pittsburgh for permission to talk to Jamie Dixon about its coaching opening, Panthers athletic director Steve Pederson said. Pat Kilkenny, the former Oregon athletic director who is leading the Ducks' coaching search, and Dixon were in New York last weekend, leading to speculation the two at least may have talked.
UCLA: The school dismissed sophomore center J'mison Morgan from the team. Meanwhile, coach Ben Howland said his top assistant, Donny Daniels, is leaving after seven years to take a similar job on the staff of Gonzaga coach Mark Few.
West Virginia: The grueling daily workouts to strengthen a surgically repaired left shoulder now seem worth it for Joe Mazzulla. Nearly 16 months later, the injury is healed and he's finally pain free. His timing couldn't be better. With Darryl "Truck" Bryant out with a broken foot, Mazzulla is the only healthy point guard on the roster and giving the Mountaineers a needed boost entering their first Final Four trip in 51 years. "It's feeling great now," Mazzulla said. "It was a very long road, physically and mentally."
Boston College: Al Skinner is out as coach, ending a 13-year tenure with the Eagles.
Duquesne: Forward Bill Clark has been reinstated to the team after his March 16 suspension for what the school called unacceptable conduct.
Penn: Jerome Allen is losing his interim tag as head coach. Allen will remain Penn's coach, the school announced.
Toledo: The school has hired Wisconsin-Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk to revive its men's team after the worst season (4-28) in school history.
Mississippi State: The Division I Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee has denied Mississippi State's appeal of the NCAA's penalty against player Renardo Sidney. The independent committee's decision closes the 11-month investigation into the top prospect's eligibility, a news release from the school says.
UTPA: The University of Texas-Pan American men's program committed "major violations" in recruiting between 2006 and 2008 and will be put on two years probation, the NCAA announced.
CIT: Caleb Patterson scored 16 points to lead Missouri State (24-12) to a 78-65 win over Pacific (23-12) to capture the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship in Springfield, Mo.
NIT: Chris Johnson scored 22 points and Dayton (24-12) held off Mississippi (24-11) 68-63 in the semifinals in New York. .... Deon Thompson had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and fourth-seeded North Carolina (20-16) defeated Rhode Island (26-10) 68-67 in overtime to reach the championship game.
