SERIES HISTORY: San Jose State leads 9-6. BYU has won the past three meetings, including a 29-16 victory last season in Provo, Utah. The Spartans' last win was in 1968, the last time BYU visited Spartans Stadium.

STORYLINE: SJSU can reach nine wins for the first time since 2006 and add a signature win to its résumé. The Spartans are 2-2 this season against bowl-eligible teams and close the season with two more opportunities for victories against bowl-bound squads. BYU has already accepted an invitation to the Poinsettia Bowl. The teams have faced two common opponents -- Idaho and Utah State. BYU and SJSU both earned lopsided wins over Idaho. The Cougars beat Utah State 6-3 while the Spartans lost 49-27.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: San Jose State's running game vs. BYU's defense. The Spartans running game has been inconsistent, even against teams with defense not as stout as the Cougars' fourth-ranked unit. A lack of a rushing attack in its loss to Utah State allowed the Aggies to tee off on SJSU's passing game. The Spartans will throw often against BYU, but need to establish some semblance of balance to allow the passing game to succeed.

STATS THAT MATTER: SJSU quarterback David Fales has a good chance to break several single-season school records in this game. He needs one more touchdown pass to break his tie of 25 with Steve Clarkson, who set the record in 1981. He needs 135 yards to break Mike Perez's 1987 passing yards record of 3,260. He's 263 yards from breaking Scott Rislov's 2002 total offense record and 32 completions from Rislov's pass completion mark. ... BYU has allowed more than 230 yards passing only once this season, in a 42-24 loss to Oregon State. The Cougars have held five opponents under 150 yards passing.
