SAN JOSE -- San Jose State kicker Austin Lopez has been named to the Freshman All-American team by the Football Writers Association of America.
Lopez, a true freshman from Euless, Texas, was a perfect 17 for 17 on field goals this season for the Spartans, who went 11-2 and won the Military Bowl on Dec. 27. He kicked two field goals in that 29-20 defeat of Bowling Green.
Lopez set San Jose State records for points scored by a kicker with 105 and most consecutive successful field goals. He also made a school-record 54 extra point kicks on 57 attempts. He also tied a school record with four field goals in a game, achieved in a 12-0 win over Navy.
Lopez was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which honors the nation's top kicker, and a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. He's just the second San Jose State player to earn Freshman All-American honors from the FWAA since the organization began naming the team in 2001, joining linebacker Keith Smith's selection in 2010.
