ATLANTA — The latest entry into David Akers' rickety season came when he missed his only field-goal attempt Sunday for the 49ers, failing to tie the score on a 38-yard attempt.
Akers' kick clanked off the top of the left upright in the third quarter of the 49ers' eventual 28-24, NFC-title win over the host Atlanta Falcons.
"It's a game of inches, one way or the other," Akers said. "I struck the ball well and it clangs on top of the goal past. If you figure that one out, let me know."
Asked if he figures to still have his job Feb. 3 when the 49ers play in the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Akers replied: "I'm here until they tell me otherwise."

After missing 13 of 42 field-goal attempts in the regular season, the 49ers signed Billy Cundiff on Jan. 1 to compete with Akers, who retained his job and made his only field-goal attempt in a Jan. 12 playoff-opening win. Cundiff was released Friday.
