Freshman Brian Celsi's single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Sean Peters (De La Salle High) and gave Cal a 2-1 baseball victory over Michigan on Sunday at Evans Diamond.

The Bears' win capped an opening-season three-game sweep of the Wolverines, all by one run.

Brenden Farney led off the ninth with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Mitchell Kranson (De La Salle). Devin Pearson walked, and after a wild pitch, Mike Reuvekamp (Miramonte High) was intentionally walked to set up Celsi's heroics.

Cal starter Michael Theofanopoulos (Foothill High) pitched five scoreless innings.

Austin Barr's eight-inning double was No. 7 Stanford's only hit in a 3-0 loss at No. 17 Rice.

Saint Mary's (1-3) lost 8-3 at Cal State Northridge. Christopher Akmon had a two-run double in the eighth for the Gaels.

  • Stanford freshman Mariah Stackhouse set two course records at the Peg Barnard Invitation with a 9-under 26 on the front nine and a 10-under 61 at Stanford Golf Course. She had two eagles and five birdies on the front side and finished two rounds at 14-under 130, 10 shots ahead of San Jose State's Regina DeGuzman (68) and UC Davis' Demi Runas (71). Cal's Morgan Thompson (72) was fourth at 141.

The Cardinal won the team title at 569 -- 14 shots ahead of Cal.
