The Cal women's golf team trails No. 14 Arizona State by six strokes after the first day of the two-day Cal Classic at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.

The Bears shot a 14-over 302 on Monday, with Morgan Thompson leading the way with a 1-over 73.

Former Alameda High star Carly Childs carded a 78 for Cal.

The Sun Devils posted an 8-over 296, followed by No. 13 Stanford and No. 11 UC Davis at 298 each. San Jose State was ninth at 311, with USF next at 313.

The 11 teams resume action Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

  • The Cal men's golf team and Joël Stalter swept Golfweek's collegiate Team of the Week and Player of the Week honors. Stalter led Cal to a milestone win with an eight-stroke victory at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii on the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort.

    The victory was the team's sixth in seven outings in 2012-13 to tie a school record, its third in a row at the event and the 50th career win for coach Steve Desimone.

  • Brian Cook had 13 kills to help No. 4 Stanford (10-6, 7-6) rally to a 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 victory over No. 12 California Baptist in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action in Riverside.

  • San Jose State's Amanda Pridmore has been named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. It's the second such honor of Pridmore's career.

    Pridmore went 2-0 with a save in four appearances last week. In 151/3

  • New Mexico State guard Camila Rosen (Berkeley High) has been named Western Athletic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week.

    She scored a career-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds, a career-best six steals and two assists in a win over CSU Bakersfield. Rosen entered the game averaging 3.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals on the season.

  • Cal State East Bay's Kyle Zozaya has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week. Zozaya hit .647 with four runs scored, four doubles, a home run, and seven RBIs.

    Fencing

    San Francisco's Alexander Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt won bronze medals at the La Coruna Foil World Cup in Spain last weekend.

    London Olympics teammates, Meinhardt and Massialas both lost their semifinal bouts. Meinhardt fell 15-6 to South Korea's Jun Heo, and Massialas lost 15-9 to Russia's Artur Akhmatkhzin. Heo went on to take the silver, and Akhmatkhzin won gold.

    It's the third Senior World Cup bronze medal for Meinhardt, a Stanford freshman.

    Lafayette's David Willette won his table of 64 bout, 15-14, over China's Jianfei Ma, the fourth-ranked men's foil fencer in the world. Willette lost his next bout, 15-12, to Marcel Marcilloux of France to finish 32nd.
