HAYWARD -- Elliott Pitts had a game-high 21 points as the De La Salle High used another trademark defensive effort down the stretch to beat San Leandro 43-39 on Saturday at Chabot College in the second round of the Northern California Division I regional playoffs.
It's the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the sixth-seeded Spartans (26-4) have advanced to the regional semifinals, as they will play No. 2 Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove on Tuesday.
The loss ends an incredible season by No. 3 San Leandro, which advanced to the Northern California playoffs after reaching the North Coast Section championship game for the first time in school history.
Trailing 38-29, the Pirates (24-7) went on a 10-2 run to pull within a point and had the ball with 34.5 seconds left.
Dejon Budreaux missed a jumper from the top of the key and De La Salle's Mac Hoffman grabbed the rebound before Pitts was fouled with 25.1 seconds remaining. After Pitts split a pair of free throws, Budreaux missed a shot before Pitts iced the game with two free throws. Ishmail Ali had 20 points and Budreaux added 14.
