Keldon Hunter doubled home the winning run with one out in the seventh inning to give the San Lorenzo High baseball team a 3-2 victory over Encinal on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Willie Stargell Memorial Easter Classic.
Encinal, playing as the visitors on its own Willie Stargell Field, loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but did not score. Alejandro Avila then began the winning rally with a leadoff walk. Avila gave way to pinch runner Kenneth Aguiluz, who came around to score on Hunter's double.
Pitcher Christian Lemos-Marquez went the distance for the win, as San Lorenzo (2-10) advanced to play Acalanes, a 3-2 winner over Alameda in the day's earlier semifinal, in Thursday's championship at Encinal at 1:30 p.m. Encinal (6-5-1) will play Alameda for third place at 11 a.m.
Wednesday's result was radically different from when the two teams met March 22, as San Lorenzo lost 18-0 at home.
The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Kaleo Johnson reached on an error and later scored on a Nick Solis single. San Lorenzo responded in the bottom of the inning when Hunter reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on Zak Alkatib's sacrifice bunt and scored the tying run when Lemos-Marquez hit into a fielder's choice.
Encinal took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Johnson singled home Branson Alcala, but San Lorenzo tied things in the bottom of the inning when Lemos-Marquez singled home pinch runner Aaron Phillips.
Freedom High star Joe Mixon tweeted Wednesday that he will be playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl (Jan. 4) and will be making his college commitment there.
