Missy Franklin had a busy night at the FINA World Championships, but the first race didn't go as she hoped.
The Cal freshman-to-be placed fourth in the women's 100-meter freestyle, ending a run of four straight victories in Barcelona, Spain.
"I'm a little bummed," said Franklin, who finished in 53.47 seconds. Cate Campbell won in 52.34.
Franklin shook off the loss, though, coming back 25 minutes later to post the top qualifying time in the semifinals of the 200 backstroke (2 minutes, 6.46 seconds). Cal's Liz Pelton (2:08.20) had the third best time.
Also, former Cal sprinters Anthony Ervin and Nathan Adrian qualified for the men's 50 freestyle final. Cal alum Dana Vollmer and incoming freshman Farida Osman of Egypt qualified for the women's 50 butterfly final.
Ryan Lochte was the star of the night, taking the men's 200 backstroke and putting the Americans ahead to stay with a strong leg in the 800 freestyle relay.
Cal is still in the hunt for five-star running back Joe Mixon of Freedom High-Oakley, according to the recruiting websites Scout.com and Rivals.com. Mixon said he'll also consider Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Mixon said they were in no particular order.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers topped the 16 match-play qualifiers in the 111th Western Amateur, shooting a 3-under 69 at The Alotian Club for an 18-under 270 in Roland, Ark. USF's Cory McElyea (71-282) also advanced, while Cal's Michael Weaver (76-284) and Brandon Hagy (71-285) missed the cut.
Indiana waived Jasmine Hassell to clear a roster spot so former Stanford star Jeanette Pohlen can make her season debut Saturday against Chicago. She hasn't played since tearing a knee ligament during the 2012 WNBA Finals.
Pleasanton National will need to win an extra game if it hopes to reach the U.S. title game after a 6-5 loss to Port Oak-Houston at the Intermediate Little League World Series in Livermore. Pleasanton plays Collier Township (Pa.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The winner will advance to Sunday's final against Port Oak.
