After Day 1 in Moscow, Usain Bolt is on track to recapture the 100-meter gold medal he lost at the last world championships.

Even if a false start in Bolt's heat was reminiscent of the one that disqualified him in the 2011 final, it was the runner next to him who was sent packing Saturday. On the second attempt, Bolt cruised to a time of 10.07 seconds. Americans Mike Rodgers (9.98) and Justin Gatlin (9.99) had the top times.

In the men's 10,000, double Olympic long-distance champion Mo Farah fought off Ibrahim Jeilan over the last 150 meters, winning in 27 minutes, 21.72 seconds. Jeilan was timed in 27:22.23.

Defending champion Edna Kiplagat won the women's marathon in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 44 seconds. She beat Valeria Straneo by 14 seconds. In sweltering heat only 46 of 70 entrants finished.

In the decathlon, Olympic champion Ashton Eaton led after five events -- 4,502-4,493 over U.S. teammate Gunnar Nixon.

Tennis

Milos Raonic beat fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to reach the Rogers Cup final in Montreal. Also, Rafael Nadal edged defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2). Djokovic and Nadal met for the 36th time, tying the record for the Open era set by John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl. Nadal leads the series 21-15.

  • Serena Williams reached the Rogers Cup final, beating Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 (3), 6-4 in Toronto. The two-time tournament champion will face Sorana Cirstea, a 6-1, 7-6 (5) winner over Li Na.

    USC wide receiver Marqise Lee missed practice, a day after he left practice early with an apparent shoulder injury. USC wouldn't disclose the nature of the injury, but the All-American told teammates he'd be "fine."

  • South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney sat out a scrimmage because of a sore shoulder, but defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said the All-American's condition wasn't serious.

    Motor sports

    Marcos Ambrose won the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International (N.Y.). Ambrose, who's won the past two Cup races at the 2.45-mile road course, turned a fast lap of 128.281 mph. Clint Bowyer qualified second, followed by Martin Truex Jr., AJ Allmendinger and Kyle Busch.

  • Brad Keselowski passed Joey Logano for the lead with 16 laps to go, then held off Sam Hornish Jr. to win the 82-lap Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen. Logano finished 21st after running out of gas on the final lap.

    Alvaro Saborio converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute, and Real Salt Lake (12-7-5) scored a 1-0 win over Houston (9-9-6). Real Salt Lake has 41 points, tops in MLS.

  • Mauro Rosales scored in the first half, and Seattle (10-7-4) hung on for a 2-1 win over Toronto (4-11-8).

  • Kei Kamara scored in each half, and Sporting Kansas City (11-7-6) retook the Eastern Conference lead with a 3-0 win over New England (8-9-6).

    Nick Davila threw eight touchdown passes, and defending champion Arizona beat visiting Spokane 65-57 in the National Conference title game. The Rattlers play Philadelphia for the ArenaBowl title Friday in Orlando, Fla. Dan Raudabaugh had eight TD passes in the Soul's 75-59 win at Jacksonville in the American Conference final.

    Investigators in the Aaron Hernandez murder case have searched a Bristol, Conn., storage unit rented in the name of his fiancee because they believed Shayanna Jenkins made "overt attempts to hide evidence." Jenkins hasn't been charged in connection with the June 17 shooting death of Odin Lloyd, her sister's boyfriend. Hernandez is charged with first-degree murder.
