The city of Santa Rosa announced late Friday that it would not bid to host a stage of the 2014 Amgen Tour of California, taking a break from the bike race that passed through Sonoma County in seven of the past eight years -- including the overall start to the 2012 event.
The city cited donor fatigue and "the potential for greater success after a hiatus" from the race, city manager Kathy Millison told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Livermore, which hosted stages the past three years, had earlier bowed out, citing demands on city resources and staff.
Taylor Uhl, a junior transfer from Minnesota, had a goal and two assists to lead second-ranked Stanford to an 8-0 exhibition victory over visiting Grand Canyon. The Cardinal opens at Boston College on Friday.
San Jose Giants
Chris Lofton hit a solo homer and Ricky Oropesa had a run-scoring double and RBI-single, leading the Giants to a 4-2 Cal League win over Inland Empire. Kelvin Marte (5-4, 3.75) and three relievers shut down the 66ers.
Team USA fell to Canada 27-9 in Charleston, S.C. The Eagles will need a big win in the second leg in Toronto next weekend if they are to ensure qualification for the 2015 World Cup England. Captain Todd Clever of San Jose made his 51st cap for Team USA.
San Jose native Danielle Robinson had 20 points and eight assists to lead San Antonio (9-15) to an 88-82 win over visiting Phoenix (13-12). Robinson sported a pink Mohawk in honor of the team's Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
