New Orleans outside linebacker Will Smith, one of the Saints' top pass rushers during the past nine seasons, has a knee injury that will sideline him for the 2013 season, a person familiar with the situation said.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the team has not commented publicly on Smith's injury, which occurred Sunday during an exhibition game against Houston.
Smith was a projected starter, as was fellow outside linebacker Victor Butler, who also is recovering from knee surgery that will sideline him most or all of the season.
Redskins: Donte Stallworth was cut by Washington, thwarting the veteran receiver's comeback. Stallworth, 32, was hindered through most of training camp by a hamstring injury. He signed with the Redskins in June, three months after he was seriously burned in a hot-air balloon accident in Florida.
Vikings: Pro Bowl fullback Jerome Felton has received a three-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse, the league announced.
Chiefs: Tight end Tony Moeaki suffered a fractured shoulder Saturday in an exhibition victory over Pittsburgh. Coach Andy Reid said Moeaki was undergoing further examinations before Monday's practice and did not indicate how long Moeaki would be out.
Jets: Mark Sanchez is hoping to return for the start of the regular season. The Jets quarterback, dealing with a shoulder injury, has been ruled out for the team's final exhibition game Thursday against Philadelphia.
Packers: The race to kick for Green Bay is down to two candidates after the team released former Cal player Giorgio Tavecchio. That leaves incumbent Mason Crosby and newly-signed rookie free agent Zach Ramirez.
Chargers: Cornerback Steve Williams, a fifth-round pick from Cal, was placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle.
