Former Bellarmine College Prep quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels passed for 300 yards in his first start at Vanderbilt, but Mississippi used a late TD run to earn a 39-35 victory in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.

Carta-Samuels, a backup last season after transferring from Wyoming, put the Commodores up 35-32 on a 34-yard TD pass with 1:30 left.

But Jeff Scott scored on a 75-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left as the Rebels rallied to beat their SEC rival.

Carta-Samuels finished 21 of 36 with two TD passes and two interceptions.

  • Morgan Marlborough and Julie Johnsson both scored in the first 91 seconds, helping Santa Clara (1-2) to a 4-0 women's soccer rout of visiting Long Beach State.

    San Jose Giants

    Kyle Crick allowed two hits over seven shutout innings as San Jose routed Visalia 11-1. Mac Williamson and Matt Duffy both hit home runs. It was No. 25 for Williamson.

    Judo

    San Jose State's Marti Malloy won a silver medal at the World Championships, losing to Brazil's Rafaela Silva in the 57-kilogram class in Rio de Janeiro. Malloy took bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.
