Adrienne Gehan had 11 kills and eight digs, and Christina Higgins added 10 kills as the No. 23 Cal's women's volleyball team swept Santa Clara 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 at the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at Haas Pavilion on Friday night.

Cal (7-0) has yet to lose a set this season and hit for a .361 clip against the Broncos (4-4).

In the first match of the day, Kansas State defeated Cal Poly in four sets.

  • No. 8 Stanford defeated Yale (25-17, 25-20, 25-18) and Army (25-15, 25-17, 25-17), Friday, in the Service Academy Challenge at the Pentagon Athletic Center in Washington, D.C. The Cardinal improves to 5-2.

  • Hanah Blume became the 21st player in San Jose State history to record a double-double in a match (21 kills, 20 digs), but the Spartan lost 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 16-25, 15-11 to Winthrop at the Bankers Classic in Stockton.

    Men's soccer

    Fifth-ranked Cal (3-0-1) went to double overtime in a 1-1 tie against Penn State at Jeffrey Field.

  • Stanford defeated visiting Grand Canyon 2-1.

    The Cardinal got more good news earlier in the day when Grande Sports Academy announced that defender Justen Glad, an under-17 U.S. national team member from Tucson, has committed to play at Stanford next year.



    The Stanford women's lacrosse team will play the 2013 World Cup champion United States national team in a game at Towson University live on ESPN3 on Oct. 13. The game is one of four the U.S. will play over the weekend, all against 2013 NCAA tournament teams.

  • Russell Baze increased his lead over Juan Hernandez in the jockey standings by winning three races Friday at Golden Gate Fields.
