Four players with Bay Area ties, led by strikers Alex Morgan and Christian Press, were named to the U.S. women's soccer team that will play New Zealand on Oct. 27 at Candlestick Park.

Former Stanford stars Nicole Barnhart and Rachel Buehler were also among the 25 players selected. Press also is a Cardinal alum while Morgan played at Cal.

The top-ranked Americans open a three-game series Oct. 20 at San Antonio against Australia. Then they play New Zealand in San Francisco and again on Oct. 30 in Columbus, Ohio.

  • Center back Victor Bernardez and midfielder Marvin Chavez won't be available for the Earthquakes' showdown Oct. 9 against Colorado at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Hondurans have been called to the national team for CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Jamaica. San Jose was already going into the key match without forward Steven Lenhart, who is serving a one-game suspension.

    Cal's Klara Fabikova moved into the singles round of 16 in the qualifying round at the ITA All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades. Cal's Lynn Chi and Stanford's Carol Zhao advanced in the consolation bracket.

  • Stanford forward Jordan Morris was named Pac-12 men's Player of the Week.

  • Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell was named Pac-12 women's Defensive Player of the Week.
