San Jose State sophomore Cody Blick was named Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for September on Wednesday.
Blick (San Ramon Valley High) is the first Spartans golfer since Arron Oberholser in 1995-96 to win back-to-back tournaments. He was medalist at both the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., and Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich.
His fall stroke average of 67.67 ranks No. 2 in the nation, according to GolfStat. The Cal women's golf team cracked both national rankings this week after opening the fall season with a win at the Ptarmigan Classic. The Bears are 17th in the GolfStat poll and 25th in the GolfWorld/WGCA Coaches poll. The National Football Foundation said Cal fifth-year senior offensive lineman Mark Brazinski is one of 170 candidates for the 2013 National Scholar-Athlete Awards. Those candidates also comprise the semifinal list for the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy ("Academic Heisman"). Brazinski earned two bachelor's degrees in his first three years at Cal. He's in his second year of Cal's Master of Information Management and Systems program. The WCC has teamed up with Time Warner Cable SportsNet to host a basketball tipoff Oct. 24. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will include live streamed interviews on the conference's new platform, TheW.tv. Stanford lacrosse coach Amy Bokker will be an assistant on the U.S. women's national team.
