In a battle between two of the top men's water polo teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, No. 3 Pacific tipped No. 4 Cal 7-6 at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday.
The Golden Bears (8-3, 0-1) were led by junior Olympian Aleksa Saponjic's two goals, including a score with 6:37 in the third period that gave Cal a 6-4 advantage.
Balazs Erdelyi brought the Tigers' (10-1, 2-0) back with two goals toward the end of the third period to tie the score 6-6. Goran Tomasevic notched what proved to be the game-winner at 6:07 left in the match.
Three Gaels registered double-doubles to help Saint Mary's beat Pacific 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 in the Tigers' first trip to McKeon Pavilion as a member of the West Coast Conference.
Jordan Shaw and Samantha Tinsley each had a match-high 16 kills for Saint Mary's (8-5, 4-1 WCC).
Shaw added 16 digs and Tinsley had 12. The Gaels' Kristina Graven had 11 kills and 10 digs.
Pacific fell to 9-7, 2-3 WCC.
Freshman Mary Fraser scored on a blast from 30 yards out in the 37th minute, and host Saint Mary's (5-7-0) held on for a 1-0 win over USF (5-5-2) in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.
SMC goalkeeper Kaeli Schmidt improved her record to 4-7-0 this season, while USF's Madalyn Schiffel went to 5-5-2.
