Kobe Bryant said he needs to condition for three weeks so he can restore his stamina and flexibility before returning to play.
He said he'll begin those exercises once he can run and jump without feeling like he has what he called "Bambi legs."
It's doubtful that Bryant will play in the Los Angeles Lakers' season opener Oct. 29 against the Clippers. Not that he sounds worried.
"When I'm ready, I'm ready," said Bryant, who's currently running at his full body weight on a treadmill.
Bryant tore his Achilles tendon April 12. He spent last week in Germany undergoing treatment on his right knee.
"I got to get my fat behind in shape," he said.
Receiver Marqise Lee (sprained knee) is unlikely to play for USC (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) against Arizona (3-1, 0-1) on Thursday night. The game will be Ed Orgeron's first since being named USC interim coach.
AJ Allmendinger will race in the IndyCar season finale for Penske Racing. He'll drive the No. 2 car with sponsorship from Izod on Oct. 19 at Fontana. Also, Alex Tagliani will replace Dario Franchitti, who suffered two fractured vertebrae and a broken ankle in a crash at Sunday's Grand Prix of Houston.
Kekuta Manneh had a hat trick, and Vancouver (12-11-9) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 4-1 win at Seattle (15-10-9). The Sounders stayed a point behind Real Salt Lake for the Western Conference lead.
