The No. 8 Cal women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 1-1 draw in double overtime against USC on Friday at Goldman Field.
The Bears are now 9-0-4 (2-0-2 Pac-12), while the Women of Troy are 5-6-2 (0-3-1 Pac-12).
Senior captain Rachel Mercik scored Cal's only goal in the 27th minute, but the Bears were limited to eight shots through the 110 minutes. USC had a 20-8 edge in shots.
Cal goalkeeper Emily Kruger made five saves, allowing just Alex Quincey's goal at 77:13.
"We have to do a better job offensively, but defensively we did very well," Cal coach Neil McGuire said. Saint Mary's (5-9, 1-1 WCC) dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Pacific (2-8-2, 1-1) at Saint Mary's Stadium. UOP's Maricela Padilla took a pass from Zarette Munoz-Aguilar after a Gaels turnover. Munoz-Aguilar got around an SMC defender and slid a pass to the streaking Padilla in the box. Padilla put home the golden-goal in the 95th minute. Gabby Garcia's goal within the match's opening five minutes was all host Boise State (8-4-2, 3-1 Mountain West) needed, as San Jose State lost 3-0. The Spartans (2-11, 1-4) were out-shot 24-2. Brady Jimison scored from outside the box at 94:27, giving the USF men's soccer team (4-5-1, 1-2-1 WCC) a 1-0 overtime win at Santa Clara (4-7, 1-2). Keeper Kendall McIntosh had five saves for the Broncos, who out-shot the Dons 19-10. San Jose State's Colton Portela, Frankie Beauchamp and Rory Knibbs all scored second-half goals, but CSU Bakersfield (3-6-1, 1-1 WAC) prevailed 4-3 over the host Spartans (0-8-2, 0-2-1). The eighth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team (11-3, 4-1 Pac-12) scored the first five points of the match and was never threatened in a 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of Utah (13-4, 2-2) at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal was led by 10 kills on a .529 efficiency by Carly Wopat. The middle blocker also had five blocks and two digs. Marissa Brand had 13 kills, but San Jose State (4-12, 1-5 Mountain West) lost 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 to host Fresno State (9-9, 3-2). The Cal men's swimming and diving team defeated Indiana 173-122 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Jeremy Bagshaw, Tyler Messerschmidt and Ryan Murphy had two individual wins apiece. Also, Tommy Selby was second in the 3-meter springboard with a school-record 391.50 (topping the mark of 381.15 set by Sam Helvie in 2007). He was third in the 1-meter board. The Cal men's basketball team will host an open practice at Haas Pavilion from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Bears begin the regular season against Coppin State on Nov. 8 at 9 p.m. Former Saint Mary's halfback Herman Wedemeyer is among seven inductees selected for the inaugural class for the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. The enshrinement ceremony will be held prior to the NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu on Jan. 23, 2014. The class also includes Junior Seau and Jack Thompson.
Wedemeyer finished fourth in the 1945 Heisman Trophy balloting and was the first Polynesian inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He later was a regular on the TV series "Hawaii Five-O."
