The Earthquakes' playoff hopes took a hit when the Colorado Rapids posted a 3-2 MLS win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.

Gabriel Torres scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute, as the Rapids (14-10-9, 51 points) moved into a tie for third place in the Western Conference with Seattle (15-12-6) and Los Angeles (15-11-6).

The Quakes (13-11-8, 47 points) are sixth and have two games left, including Sunday night against the Galaxy in Carson. The top five teams in each conference make the playoffs.

Michel had a goal and an assist to help FC Dallas beat Seattle 2-0. Also, Portland (13-5-15, 54 points) and Real Salt Lake (15-10-8, 53) battled to a 0-0, and the Timbers remained in first place in the West and clinched a playoff spot.

Golf

Webb Simpson maintained a four-stroke lead in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, birdieing four of the last seven holes at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. He shot a 4-under 67 to reach 19-under 194. Chesson Hadley (67) reached 15 under with an eagle on the par-5 16th.

  • Katherine Hull-Kirk had an erratic 2-under 70 and shared a one-shot lead with Anna Nordqvist (70) at the KEB HanaBank Championship in Incheon, South Korea. Both were at 7-under 137. Hull-Kirk's day included an eagle and a double bogey. Michelle Wie (73) was at 142.

  • Bernhard Langer had a 4-under 66 despite two opening bogeys and held a two-shot lead at the Greater Hickory Classic in Conover, N.C. He was at 10-under 130. San Mateo's Michael Allen (65), Brad Bryant (66) and John Riegger (67) shared second.

    Miscellany

    Cain Velasquez (13-1) stopped Junior dos Santos (16-3) in the fifth round at UFC 166 in Houston to retain the heavyweight title. In the final round, the two traded lefts before Velasquez landed a left and took dos Santos down head-first to the mat, causing referee Herb Dean to stop it at 3:09. The fight was third between the two. Dos Santos beat Velasquez in the first meeting in 2011, and Velasquez won the second in 2012.

  • Former Stanford star Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross won two matches to reach the AVP Championships semifinals in Huntington Beach. If they win Sunday's final, Walsh Jennings would earn her 113th beach volleyball title, breaking the women's record she shares with her retired former partner, Misty May-Treanor. All but eight of Walsh Jennings' titles were with May-Treanor. The duo has three Olympic gold medals

  • The Utah Jazz signed forward Derrick Favors to a four-year contract extension worth a reported $49 million.
