Katie Ledecky beat Cal freshman Missy Franklin in a 500-yard freestyle matchup between Olympic gold medalists Thursday in Day 1 of the Winter National Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

Ledecky won in 4 minutes, 32.37 seconds. Franklin was second at 4:34.63.

Franklin swam on Cal's winning 400 medley relay team. Also, the Bears' Elizabeth Pelton won the 200 individual medley in 1:54.15, just ahead of teammate Celina Li.

Other winners included former Cal and Olympic stars Nathan Adrian in the men's 50 freestyle (18.89 seconds) and Natalie Coughlin in the women's 50 freestyle (21.51).

Colleges

Nate Kratch and Evan Roquemore each buried two 3-pointers to start the second half and spark a 37-18 run that led to Santa Clara's 60-42 win at Cal State Bakersfield (5-4). Roquemore led the Broncos (3-4) with 12 points, and Kratch added 11.

  • The Saint Mary's women's basketball team (7-1) lost at Sacramento State 94-92 despite 30 points and 12 rebounds by Jackie Nared. The Hornets (5-1) trailed by many as 16 points in the first half.

  • Stanford (25-5) advanced to the second round of the NCAA women's volleyball tournament by sweeping Hampton 25-10, 25-10, 25-11 in Maples Pavilion. Carly Wopat had 11 kills and six blocks for the Cardinal, which plays Oklahoma (24-7) on Friday.

    Cal (17-12) plays North Carolina on Friday in Madison, Wis.

  • Stanford (22-5) routed Whittier 20-3 in an NCAA men's water polo championship play-in game at Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal plays Pacific in Saturday's semifinal.

    Figure skating

    San Jose's Polina Edmunds, 15, placed fifth out of six competitors in the short program of the Junior Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka, Japan. "I'm not happy with it," she said. "I didn't trust myself."
