Cal freshman Missy Franklin set a meet record in the 200-yard freestyle Friday at the Winter Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist finished in 1 minute, 41.40 seconds. She also won the 100 backstroke (51.59 seconds) and joined Cal teammates Caroline Piehl, Camille Cheng and Elizabeth Pelton on an 800 freestyle relay team that set a meet mark of 6:59.11.
In the 200 freestyle, Franklin beat fellow Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky (1:42.03). Cal's Pelton was third, Piehl fifth, Cheng seventh and Rachael Acker eighth. A day earlier, Ledecky was first and Franklin second in the 500 freestyle.
In the 100 backstroke, Franklin was followed in order by teammates Pelton, Rachel Bootsma and Melanie Klaren.
"To come to nationals and get one through four is awesome," Franklin said. Cal's Celina Li won the 400 individual medley in 4:06.54, and the Bears' Cindy Tran, Marina Garcia, Farida Osman and Kaylin Bing took the 200 medley relay in 1:36.91.
Ex-Cal star Damir Dugonjic won the men's 100 breaststroke in 51.93.
Coach Rich Feller recorded his 600th career victory as Cal beat North Carolina 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 in the first round of the NCAA women's volleyball tournament in Madison, Wis. The Bears (18-12) will face Wisconsin (24-9) on Saturday. Feller (600-332) is the 29th coach in Division I history to reach that milestone. Michelle Neumayr led Cal with 11 kills.
Exit Stage Left, a 2-year-old colt that won the Golden Nugget Stakes in his debut Nov. 9, is the 7-to-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Exit Stage Left will be ridden by Russell Baze in the one-mile race.
