Assistant coach Mike Sanford is leaving Stanford to become the offensive coordinator at Boise State, his alma mater.

Sanford, who oversees the Cardinal's quarterbacks and receivers and is the recruiting coordinator, is expected to remain on staff through the Rose Bowl against Michigan State on Jan. 1.

"I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to return to my alma mater," Sanford said in a statement released by Boise State on Wednesday.

Former assistant Bryan Harsin is the new Broncos coach. He replaced Chris Petersen, who left for Washington.

Also, Stanford guard David Yankey, linebacker Trent Murphy and kick returner Ty Montgomery were named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America Team. With just one official All-America team set to be released, Yankey has a chance to be a unanimous selection again.

  • San Jose State receiver Chandler Jones and cornerback Bené Benwikere accepted invitations to play in the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 18 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

  • Stanford's Carly Wopat and Inky Ajanaku were first-team All-America selections by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Madi Bugg was second team and Kyle Gilbert and Jordan Burgess were honorable mention. Wopat, a senior, was a repeat first-team choice. Cal's Christina Higgins was second team, and Joan Caloiaro honorable mention. Saint Mary's Jordan Shaw and Kristina Graven were honorable mention.

  • Lauren Hanson, winner of the NCAA Women's College Cup as a player and an assistant coach at Portland, was named the San Jose State women's soccer coach, athletic director Gene Bleymaier said. Hanson was the associate head coach at Oregon from 2009-11. Jeff Leightman resigned after six seasons as the Spartans' coach.

  • Johnny Bega, a member of the San Jose State women's water polo coaching staff since 2007, was named interim coach after the death of coach Lou Tully on Tuesday.


    The Earthquakes selected former Chicago right fullback Shaun Francis, 27, in the MLS re-entry draft in anticipation of losing 2012 All-Star Steven Beitashour, who is seeking to play in Europe. The Quakes also picked former New York left fullback Brandon Barklage, 27, a day after trading defender Justin Morrow to Toronto FC for allocation money. Two former Earthquakes also were taken -- defender Nana Attakora by D.C. United and midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy by Vancouver.
