Stanford guard David Yankey and outside linebacker Trent Murphy were named first team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America.

Yankey earned unanimous status, having been named to every major All-America team. The senior was a consensus selection last season at tackle.

Cardinal kick returner Ty Montgomery, outside linebacker Shayne Skov and free safety Ed Reynolds were second team.

Murphy and Montgomery were consensus All-America picks.

Soccer

San Jose's Brandi Chastain highlights U.S. Soccer's all-time women's national team Best XI, announced as part of the federation's centennial anniversary. Others with Bay Area ties are Stanford alum Julie Foudy and Cal graduates Joy Fawcett Biefeld and Alex Morgan. Mia Hamm and Biefeld were unanimous choices. Morgan, 24, was one of three active players picked along with Christie Rampone and Abby Wambach.

Golf

Cal junior and Torrey Pines High alum Michael Kim has turned pro and accepted a sponsor's exemption to play in the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Jan. 23-26. "I'm excited to take the next step," Kim, 20, told the Union-Tribune San Diego. On Tuesday, Kim tied for 56th in the Web.com Tour's qualifying tournament in La Quinta, earning partial exempt status for 2014.
