Thoroughbred racing in the Bay Area resumes Thursday when Golden Gate Fields opens its winter/spring meeting, a 101-day season that runs through June 15, 2014.
There is a special 12:15 p.m. first post for the opening nine-race card.
Racing will be conducted on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule, and the standard post time is 12:45 p.m. There will be a special Jan. 1 card and holiday cards on Jan. 20 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), Feb. 17 (Presidents' Day) and May 26 (Memorial Day).
A trio of Grade 3 stakes -- the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15, $100,000 San Francisco Mile on April 26 and $100,000 All American on May 26 -- headline an 11-race stakes schedule.
The El Camino Real Derby, a 11/8-mile race for 3-year-olds, is a Kentucky Derby prep race.
Every Sunday will be Dollar Day at the Albany track.
Stanford third baseman Alex Blandino was selected to the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America third team, Collegiate Baseball announced. Blandino hit .268 with seven homers and 32 RBIs last season. A native of Palo Alto, Blandino was a Freshman All-American in 2012. Stanford opens Feb. 14 against Vanderbilt at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. USF outfielder Bradley Zimmer was named to the first team. He hit .320 with seven homers, 37 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 2013.
