Tommy Rees threw for 319 yards, leading No. 25 Notre Dame (9-4) to a 29-16 win over Rutgers (6-7) in the Pinstripe Bowl Saturday in New York.

The game, played before 47,122 at Yankee Stadium, wasn't pretty and had an offensive lineman win the MVP award -- Fighting Irish tackle Zack Martin.

Rees, in the final game of an up-and-down college career, went 27 for 47 with no interceptions.

Irish junior running back George Atkinson III was suspended for the game. The son of the former Raiders great tweeted: "For those of you wondering, I was suspended from today's game for texting friends and family during team meal, as i did all season."

Coach Brian Kelly said Atkinson, who attended Granada High-Livermore, and junior cornerback Jalen Brown were suspended for violating team rules. Atkinson, who's applied for draft feedback from the NFL, ran for 555 yards this year.

  • ESPN's Chris Fowler posted on his Twitter account that he needed broadcast partner Jesse Palmer to perform the Heimlich maneuver on him during halftime. "thanks Jesse Palmer! He saved me from death by dry chicken sandwich," he posted.

    Kansas State 31, Michigan 14: Jake Waters threw for 271 yards and connected with Tyler Lockett on three touchdowns as the Wildcats (8-5) beat the Wolverines (7-6) in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. Freshman quarterback Shane Morris started in place of injured Devin Gardner, and Michigan had 261 total yards.

    Louisville 36, Miami 9: Teddy Bridgewater had three touchdown passes and ran for a score as the No. 18 Cardinals (12-1) routed the Hurricanes (9-4) in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla. Bridgewater was 35 for 45 for 447 yards.

    North Carolina 39, Cincinnati 17: Ryan Switzer scored on an 86-yard punt return to help the Tar Heels (7-6) beat the Bearcats (9-4) in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. He had five punt returns for TDs, tying the NCAA season record.
