A day after shooting a 9-under 63 at PGA West's Arnold Palmer Private Course, Patrick Reed had a 9-under 63 at La Quinta Country Club on Friday to stretch his lead to two shots over Brendon Todd at the Humana Challenge.

"It's great to have that feeling that you can go out and shoot 63," said Reed, the Wyndham winner in August. "It's a birdiefest, this tournament is."

Todd had a 63 on the Palmer course. He's the only player without a bogey. Ryan Palmer was at 15 under after a 65 at La Quinta. Charley Hoffman was 14 under after a 66 on the PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Private Course.

European Tour: Rory McIlroy birdied his last two holes to post a 5-under 67 and was two shots off the lead at the Abu Dhabi Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

At 7-under 137, McIlroy was rapt to be in contention. Phil Mickelson was also happy and relieved to make the cut by two shots at 1-under 143 after a second-round 70.

"I need these next two days to get my game in shape," Mickelson said.

At 135 were Craig Lee (67) and Rafa Cabrera-Bello (68), a shot ahead of Danny Willett (63). Ricardo Gonzalez (66) and Thomas Bjorn (70) were also at 137.

Champions Tour: Rocco Mediate opened with a 9-under 63 for a one-shot lead over Dan Forsman at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii. Mediate had an eagle, four birdies and one par in the first six holes at Hualalai. Fred Couples, Fred Funk, Tom Pernice Jr. and Steve Elkington shot 65.

Web.com Tour: After a one-year hiatus, the Stonebrae Classic will return to the schedule July 31-Aug. 3. TPC Stonebrae will play host again. The Hayward Hills course hosted the event from 2009-12 with Alex Aragon, Daniel Chopra, Kevin Chappell and Michael Sim as champions. It wasn't played last year to make room for construction of a 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, which is set to open in June.
