De La Salle High has added an East Coast power to its 2014 football schedule, signing a deal with Byrnes-Duncan of South Carolina.

Byrnes, which has won four state championships since 2007, will travel to the Spartans' Owen Owens Field for the Sept. 12 game.

"We're always looking for potential unique and fun games and this one fit the mold," De La Salle athletic director Leo Lopoz said. "That Byrnes was willing to come out to California also helped."

Lopoz confirmed there is a television deal in place.

Byrnes has won 11 total state championships, most of them since 2002, and produced Marcus Lattimore. Last season, the Rebels went 12-2 and reached the state semifinals.

De La Salle didn't face any out-of-state opponents last season when it went 14-1, ending with a 20-14 loss to St. John Bosco-Bellflower in the Open Division state final. Before the loss to the Braves, De La Salle had won 40 straight games with all but one -- a 30-13 win over Mullen of Colorado in 2012 -- coming against California teams.

The matchup with Byrnes highlights the Spartans' 2014 schedule, which also includes Servite-Anaheim, Del Oro-Loomis (a 2013 Division I state finalist) and defending CCS Open Division champion Serra-San Mateo.

Though De La Salle graduates multiple Division I-bound players, they return several talented underclassmen, including running back Antoine Custer and linemen Kahlil McKenzie and Boss Tagaloa.
