Nigerian Obafemi Martins scored twice in the first half as the Seattle Sounders beat the Earthquakes 2-1 in the teams' preseason openers on Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz.
Ex-Sounder Mike Fucito scored in the 86th minute for the Earthquakes. The match marked the debut of Quakes' newcomer Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi at midfielder. German trialist Andreas Gorlitz looked good at right back for San Jose.
On the Quakes' goal, Gorlitz found Atiba Harris open in the box. Harris traded passes with Fucito, who broke forward for a shot from 10 yards out.
Pierazzi nearly scored in the 24th minute with a darting run from the midfield, but his header off a Sam Garza free kick was batted out by a leaping goal keeper.
The Earthquakes complete their preseason trip to Tucson against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
