San Jose State added two more to its signing class, inking Castlemont High-Oakland twins Jordan and Jonathan Whittley.

Jordan is a 6-foot-2, 225-pound running back, and Jonathan is a 6-2, 210-pound wide receiver/safety. Both played their junior seasons at Cordova-Rancho Cordova before spending this past fall at Castlemont.

They bump the Spartans' signing class up to 22 players.

  • Stanford was picked to finish in sixth in the Pac-12 and Cal seventh by the coaches. The top three were Oregon State, Oregon and defending national champion UCLA. The Cardinal opens at Sunken Diamond against Rice on Feb. 14. The Bears host Texas on Feb. 14.

  • Kayla Bonstrom had a homer and had two RBIs, leading the No. 22 Stanford softball team (1-0) to a 9-1 five-inning rout of North Carolina State at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Sharon-Renae Estrada's fourth-inning grand slam led San Jose State to an 11-2 season-opening win over Creighton. No. 24 Cal opens Friday against New Mexico.

    Santa Clara opened its season at the Long Beach State Tournament, losing 6-0 to No. 14 Kentucky and 8-0 to the 49ers in five innings. The Wildcats' Kelsey Nunley pitched a no-hitter against the Broncos. Kelly Scribner, Ashley Haney, and Amanda Delfino each had a hit against Long Beach State.

    The Raiders finalized Dennis Allen's staff by hiring former NFL kicker Chris Boniol as an assistant special teams coach and Vernon Stephens as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

    Former Stanford and Giants outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds was hired by the Major League Baseball Players Association as special assistant for player program development.
