Santa Clara has extended the contract of Broncos women's soccer coach Jerry Smith for seven years, with a three-year option controlled by him.

Smith, 53, who has a 410-126-52 record over 27 seasons, accepted the deal after considering an offer from Notre Dame.

He will also head a newly formed Jerry Smith Coaching for Life Academy.

"My family and I are very excited about this new contract and new opportunities," Smith said Wednesday. "It's been a rough couple of weeks with us contemplating some decisions and other opportunities."

The Broncos finished 16-4-2 last season, falling to Virginia Tech in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Smith resides in San Jose with his wife and volunteer assistant Brandi Chastain, a former U.S. national team player.

    Abe Woodson, the former 49ers cornerback and return man, died. He was 79. Woodson, who played in San Francisco from 1958-64, was named to the Pro Bowl five times with the 49ers. He led the NFL in kick returns three times and was tops in punt returns once. Woodson died in Las Vegas last weekend, where he was working as a minister for the Nevada prison system, according to reports.

  • The Raiders signed running back Kory Sheets, who was the MVP of the 2013 Grey Cup when he ran for a record 197 yards in Saskatchewan's win over Hamilton.

    Ten people will be inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame at a dinner June 11 in the San Mateo County Expo Center. The inductees include former NFL players Leo Biedermann and Jabari Issa.
