Zach Hoffpauir gave the Stanford baseball team a 3-1 lead on a three-run home run, but Rice scored nine unanswered runs to win 10-3 in front of 1,298 at Sunken Diamond on Friday.

Hoffpauir's second-inning homer was the sole highlight for the Cardinal, which was limited to six hits in both teams' season openers.

Daulton Jefferies pitched six shutout innings and Cal had a five-run fifth inning en route to a 7-0 win over Texas at Evans Diamond. Derek Campbell's leadoff double was the only Cal hit in the fifth. The Bears took advantage of three Texas errors, a walk and a hit batsman.

Andre Mercurio had a two-run double in a three-run fourth, keying San Jose State's 6-4 home win over San Diego State.

Santa Clara scored an unearned run in the first inning in a 4-1 loss to visiting Nevada. The Broncos had just four hits.

  • No. 17 Stanford (8-0) opened the Stanford Nike Invitational with softball wins over Cal Poly (5-2) and Bradley (7-3). The Cardinal scored all seven runs in the second inning against Bradley.

    San Jose State (7-1) beat Michigan State 7-2, then lost 16-1 in five innings to No. 3 Washington at the Littlewood Tournament at Arizona State. In the opener, Devin Caldwell's two-run triple in the fifth gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead.

  • The No. 2 Stanford women's team (5-0) posted a 7-0 over Santa Clara (1-2) at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Ellen Tsay clinched it with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stephanie Skaras.

    San Jose State (2-8) lost 4-3 to USF (6-2) at The Olympic Club. Senior Sabastiani Leon Chao beat Marina Nikolic 6-4, 6-3 for career win 118, tied for second all-time at SJSU.

    Horse racing

    Enterprising, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, is the 5-to-2 morning line favorite for Saturday's $200,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. Northern California's official Kentucky Derby prep is a 11/8-mile test and is expected to go off between 4:30-5 p.m.
