Stanford pounded out 14 hits and crushed Rice 12-3 at Sunken Diamond to salvage the final game of the season-opening three-game series Sunday.

Brett Michael Doran had three hits, including a home run. Wayne Taylor and Zach Hoffpauir also homered for the Cardinal.

Stanford had more hits Sunday than the first two games combined (14-11).

Cal's Michael Theofanopoulos shut down No. 18 Texas through five innings before the Longhorns scored three runs in the sixth on the way to a 5-0 win at Evans Diamond. The teams split the four-game series. Cal's Vince Bruno went 2 for 4.

Andre Mercurio went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, but San Jose State (1-2) fell to visiting San Diego State 13-8. Losing pitcher Michael Wright allowed seven earned runs in one-third of an inning.

Anthony Villa continued his hot hitting with a first-inning double, and Saint Mary's (1-3) beat host New Mexico State 8-3 in eight innings. Villa went 7 for 14 in the series.

Pinch-hitter C.J. Jacobe's RBI single in the 10th gave Santa Clara (1-3) a 4-3 win over visiting Nevada. Earlier, the Broncos lost to Boston College 8-6.

  • The Saint Mary's softball team notched its first win ever over No. 23 Cal, 4-1 at the Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic in San Diego. Sarah Lira pitched a complete game against the Bears (5-4). Cassidy Szeredy's RBI single in the fifth put the Gaels ahead 2-1. Saint Mary's (4-6) then lost to San Diego State 3-2 in eight innings.

    Erin Ashby was just a triple shy of a cycle as No. 17 Stanford (11-0) posted an 11-9 win over Pacific (2-4) at the Stanford Nike Invitational.

  • Cal (6-2) lost to Texas 4-2 in the consolation bracket of the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Tennis Championships in Houston. The Bears won the doubles point, and Filip Bergevi gave Cal a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over George Goldhoff.

    Horse racing

    Tamarando and Dance With Fate, the 1-2 finishers in Saturday's El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields, exited the Kentucky Derby prep race in good order. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said he's looking at the Spiral Stakes on March 22 at Turfway Park (Ky.) as a possible race for Tamarando. Trainer Peter Eurton said Dance With Fate's next start will be the Blue Grass Stakes on April 12 at Keeneland (Ky.).
