Nelson Cruz and the Baltimore Orioles reached agreement Saturday on a one-year deal for a reported $8.5 million.
The free agent outfielder was suspended 50 games last year while with Texas as a result of the Biogenesis scandal. He returned to play one game, going 0 for 4 in the Rangers' loss to Tampa Bay in a tiebreaker for the second A.L. wild-card spot.
Cruz, 33, hit .266 with 27 homers and 76 RBIs in 109 games last year. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena to a $25 million, five-year deal. Arruebarrena, 23, defected from Cuba last fall. He was a teammate of Yasiel Puig in the Cuban League from 2010-11. New York Mets ace Matt Harvey threw for the first time since having elbow surgery Oct. 22. The right-hander threw 20 pitches at New York's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
"It was awesome," said Harvey, who didn't rule out pitching in 2014. Frank Thomas, who'll enter the Hall of Fame this summer, said he's completing details for a contract to work as a studio analyst for Fox Sports 1.
