Former Cal star Valerie Arioto and Jessica Plaza of Stanford were among the 24 players selected Tuesday to participate at the 2014 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp on June 9-12.
The two will compete for a spot on the 17-player USA Softball Women's World Championship roster that will take part in the International Softball Federation World Championship in Haarlem, Netherlands, in August.
Arioto, a pitcher/first baseman from Pleasanton, is a three-time national team member and the 2012 Pac-12 player of the year for the Bears.
Plaza, a sophomore catcher. leads Stanford with four home runs and is second with a .583 slugging percentage this season.
The final roster will be announced June 22.
Nate Nolan homered and had three hits and Anthony Gonsolin went 4 for 6 as the Saint Mary's baseball team (8-11) amassed 16 hits but still fell to Minnesota (10-6) 15-11 at Louis Guisto Field. ... Cal (10-9) was limited to three hits in a 6-0 loss to host Fresno State (14-7).
Leander finished one shot behind De Guzman at 226 to tie for fifth place.
Rachelle Reali (Livermore/Granada High) shot an 82 to finish 33rd at 238. The Spartans shot a final-round 315 and finished in fourth at 919. Fresno State and Boise State (903) tied for first, and the Bulldogs won the title on the tiebreaker by adding the fifth score. USF finished in seventh.
