It didn't go as planned Thursday for figure skater Polina Edmunds in her World Championships debut. The San Jose teenager heads into Saturday's free skate in 12th place in Saitama, Japan.
Japan's Mao Asada had 78.66 points in the short program to grab the lead ahead of Olympic bronze medalist Carolina Kostner of Italy and Russian teen Yulia Lipnitskaya.
Edmunds, 15, had one early error that dropped her below some skaters she outperformed in Sochi, where she was ninth.
"My Lutz-toe isn't how I wanted it," she told reporters. "I'm happy with the rest of my program."
The Archbishop Mitty High sophomore had 60.59 points. Fellow American Gracie Gold was fifth at 70.31, and Ashley Wagner was seventh at 63.64.
Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay had $29,029 in his Toyota Highlander when pulled over and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated last week, police say. Police reports said the money was mostly stashed in a briefcase and a laundry bag that also contained bottles containing prescription drugs. Carmel, Ind., police haven't yet decided to charge Irsay over the drugs. Irsay's family said he's now in a treatment facility "to help him meet his challenges head-on."
Phil Mickelson shot a 5-over 77 in the Texas Open to fall nine strokes back during the suspended first round at TPC San Antonio. "I had been playing real well at home, so to play like this is disappointing," he said. Pat Perez and Danny Lee shot 4-under 68 to share the clubhouse lead and Andrew Loupe was 4 under with seven holes to play when darkness forced the suspension of play.
