STANFORD -- Talk about nerds. Chiney Ogwumike and fellow Stanford senior Mikaela Ruef are as goofy as they come.
They call each other Batman & Robin.
"But she thinks she is Alfred because she thinks she is the brain," the 6-foot-4 Ogwumike said of her fellow post player. "I think she is Batman."
Ogwumike, the inspiration of the popular Nerd Nation videos, calls the 6-3 Ruef "a secret weapon."
Ruef replied: "No, I'm Alfred," she said of butler Alfred Pennyworth. "I like to be more behind the scenes. I'm not the super athletic, fit and Dark Knight with wings."
They are Stanford's super heroes under the basket, helping lead the second-seeded Cardinal to its seventh consecutive Sweet 16. Stanford (31-3) plays No. 3 Penn State at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Maples Pavilion. The winner advances to the regional final Tuesday against either top-seeded South Carolina or No. 4 North Carolina.
The Cardinal will have a different makeup once the the lanky seniors depart after the season. For now, the seniors are soaking in their final moments as teammates.
"We vent to each other," Ogwumike said. "We're like each other's psychological balances. She is like a coach to me. I try to be like an advisor to her on the court because she sometimes panics a little bit on the court."
